Counseling Philosophy
The most important thing to know
about coming to
Inquire Within, whether it be for psychotherapy, grief
counseling, a discernment, or classes, is that
Graham
and
Shannon
Maxey both trust
that the process of healing and growth takes place in each individual with
the help of intelligent currents of development to which everyone has
access. These are not always under the control
of the conscious mind, but are reliable, renewing, ever-present parts of
ourselves and our universe which can be trusted to help get us to the place
in life we need to be at any given stage of that life. Inquiring within is the way that we begin to ally ourselves
with this most potent force.
To do that for any given difficulty may mean: to
take our dreams seriously; to visualize the past from a different
perspective than the one we usually take; to rediscover our needs as opposed
to what we think we need; to open to the experience of existence that is not
just in our bodies or our brains; to think past “common sense” which is all
too often the lowest common denominator of what the group can know, and see
life from a higher wisdom. To inquire within may mean that we
silence the “inner commentator” of our lives periodically so that we can
experience the reality of life behind the words. It may mean to do something differently
than we would ever expect us to do.
It may mean that we entertain possibilities that seem foreign to us. It may mean that we put aside what we
think we should already know in order to really learn it.
When you come to Inquire Within,
or one of our seminars, or purchase a cassette tape from us, you will be
helped to pay attention to a process that is happening all your life. The help that you will get here is the
help of learning how to attend to the growth and healing that is going on
all the time. When you see the
process you can cooperate with it even more, and that growth and healing
will happen even faster.
What we promise to do is very simple:
show up; pay attention; tell the truth. Along with those simple acts we offer
the talent, knowledge, and experience to help you find your answers quickly. We do not feel that having long-term
therapy, or monthly discernments, are the ways to help people do anything
other than become dependent on something that isn’t the healing/growing
process. All of this will be done with respect,
compassion, and care any time you contact Inquire Within Counseling
and Development Center.
